Introduction(English)
Hello!
Welcome to my blog ,This is my first post for this blog.
First of all, a few things about the functions of this website. The search function is on the top-right and to open side navigation bar ,a trigram is present on the top left. Through the side navigation bar you can filter the posts here using labels or you can take a look at the archive to see posts by date. I want to add a few more navigation options to this website. Background information about this website:Its made using blogger which is a service offered by google where they give you a free hosted website on their domain.
And one more thing about the purpose of this "blog" . The purpose is to expound my thoughts as i come across and interact with interesting things ,it will most probably be related to technology. But it will be the way I look at technology and while I am completely sure of myself when I state certain things ,I know at the same time that there are many things i dont know ,in such cases I will be upfront with the reader,Other than that ,if you want ,I can give a suggestion on how to approach this website. It would be best that you focus on material that you feel is connected to you, as of now(june 14 2020) there are 11 posts(Most probably there may be lot more posts coming) ,and even now there would probably be lot of material that could be irrelevant to you , so thats why this way you will get much more out of this website.
I will be exploring the topic of gesture recognition as mentioned above in the title. By exploring here,I mean that I will be mostly relaying my thoughts or my version of what I believe to be correct about gesture recognition ,it may be about its future or some of the technologies available now in relation to it or it could just be a plain statement of the facts.
A summary of what I will exactly talk about, I will first explain why I decided to post on this topic, give some background information revolving around it, and the things related to it. I will then expound on the word "gesture" to separate it from a technical paradigm of looking at only in the context of algorithms and data. Then I will suggest some applications regarding "gestures". I would then expound upon the hardware that probably would be required. Then I would talk a little about the way I have worked on the software and the benefits I gleaned from it. In later posts (see the archive, june 2020 or label:gesture on search bar)I have given some brief explanation and demonstration of the software used in this project. I have also uploaded the code and made a small tutorial related to a subtopic and given some links to other tutorials that the reader might find useful.
Some of the things I post may be incorrect😁(because of the lack of knowledge at that point), but the point is I am continuously learning and expanding upon my knowledge and paradigms regarding gesture recognition (or as the title of the blog states, anything related to python or related and similar tools).Next I am going to be explaining the context in which my project's application is defined.
So basically the reason why I started out with gesture recognition ,despite the blog title and website name . Its mostly because as of now I am working on a gesture recognition project based on python for my final year in college.I have to say that I had a terrible history with this topic. I wanted to expound more on it for various reasons ,a few of them such as one being I was unsatisfied with the way things proceeded in regards to my efforts to prepare a "paper" or "project", and then I was facing a lot of stress during the entirety of last year which caused me lots of issues later in the second half of the year.
Another being ,I had a very contentious relationship with my guide, with some terrible and venomous moments ,atleast it affected me that much because I was so stressed out , it may have been normal scolding, but i was facing a mental health issue at that time ,so coupled with the fact that i wasn't even taking care of myself mentally meant that effect of all these moments were tremendous but later on i was able to improve the opinion of my guide by putting in some work in my presentation and some minor work on my project ,as much as I could ,She was a little reluctant to accept my change at first but then completely accepted it and even praised me a lot. And there was another key issue I was facing with , I was grappling with the meaning of jobs, positions , placements, and how other people around me related to it.Like how I was able to see in that year ,real and ugly selfishness, the way everyone just lied and pretended just to get what they want and when they got it, they would celebrate out of relief as if they found something they desperately felt that it would "complete" them.
Looking back in hindsight I think I am dissatisfied because the end result I got over the last year and all the skills I learned and the knowledge I gleaned from it were not enough (though now I am aware of the mistakes I made)and also the way I made so many mistakes over the last year..... I just have so much regret when I think of many instances and events.
But I suppose putting aside all the "grim" stuff, it was a good year aside from the bitter moments that occurred, I was able to see the truth about my environment of "jobs" ,of "apprentices", of commercial "organizations" and how they hurt themselves in their attempt to "succeed".
But anyways ,lets talk more about the word "gesture". The word gesture will perhaps bring to our mind some kind of hand signs or a special combination of finger positions, for example, say we have a gesture known as thumbs up which is very well known gesture and is made by closing our fingers and raising our thumb in upward direction and more importantly ,its meaning is universally known(While I can't say for sure it will be accepted in all regions but atleast in India,it is accepted in most places) but the point is that given a particular context, large number of people having knowledge of it gives immense meaning to that gesture so it becomes a powerful mode of communication in place of verbal communication. While it cant completely replace verbal communication ,it can definitely be used to augment efforts in our language, and it can especially be useful when we are just beginning to learn the languages.(Of course like I said before ,its dangerous to assume that one gesture one used in one place will also be accepted in the same way as they were accepted by people before). Gestures are also used by the deaf community as a means of communication. We don't normally encounter someone from the deaf community on a regular basis ,atleast not in my country, but encouraging the use of gestures in any environment will naturally make them feel more at ease since it's their usual mode of communication .
So what I am trying to emphasize is that gestures are "powerful" in an appropriate context and a relatively important part of human communication. And again I am trying to make the reader look at the "gesture" part of the gesture recognition in a manner that is not technical.
Now I am going to talk about the context in which my version of the application of gesture recognition can be theoretically applied .
A museum is a place of obtaining knowledge first hand of ancient artifacts etc, it can be a interesting experience where you can gain knowledge that possibly cannot be found in textbooks. As here you probably can interact with museum guides and benefit from their point of view and their own research on it and perhaps best of all you can benefit from obtaining "knowledge" from the original discoverers of the exhibit or artifact. Museums exist plenty in the world that deal with various types of artifacts such as dinosaur exhibits or artifacts of a historical period say the french revolution.
Now that the context has been defined ,I will expound a bit more on some technical matters that may be involved during the "deployment" of the project in a museum environment. The kind of museum environment that is selected is based on museum in London which showcases a simulation of aspects of the titanic crash using technology and props. I had just looked at it briefly since I didn't have much time ,so the only thing i have taken from that "advertisement" is background of the museum or topic its exhibits are based on.
Now consider a museum which has many exhibits on display . These days, museums often use vibrant lighting and many props as well as real artifacts and a human guide to give knowledge .Now the next part is something I have not researched much but I will be giving a high-level explanation and the parts that I know I have missed ,I will leave that to the reader(which probably must be a lot😅,honestly at this point ,this really is just a fun little experiment). Micro-controller and lcd displays(I have Arduino and raspberry pi etc in mind) and related software that may run on battery(which can be charged) and can be placed near exhibits. I want the "system" to be such that each exhibit has an lcd display(this is only one I know😅) and that these displays should be connected to single micro-controller, so I forgot what this configuration is called ,satellite?.... .I actually haven't worked much on it but I think I will definitely do so in the future although it will be on something having more advanced components and I would rather be working with someone with whom I could learn better.
But the part I have worked on was employing gesture recognition in such a system as a means of interacting with the LCD display.
In the beginning I had thought that such an endeavor or a software project would be impossible with the current tech, but I admit I was blown over with how simple it was to implement a simple gesture recognition module . But I suppose that was because of my own ignorance. I was introduced to many leading open source AI software tools due to this project ,which were very popular amongst many people. Thats why I think it might be possible for me to create such a product with the "software" available now.
Anyways , I am stopping here for now.
